Looking after your system, long after launch

Launching a website or application is only the beginning. Once your team and customers are using it, someone needs to watch for problems, look after its data and check changes before they reach users.

Hosting with Codename brings together the infrastructure, regular checks and people who know your system. Here is how those parts work together to support its day-to-day use.

Monitoring that looks beyond the homepage

A working homepage does not always mean everything behind it is working properly. Automated checks monitor availability, the health of the services your system relies on and application errors. This gives us a fuller picture of how it is running.

We built our monitoring console in-house to bring these checks into one place, helping our team see the signals together when something needs attention.

Alerts that help us investigate

When configured monitoring detects a problem, automated notifications bring it to our team’s attention. The alert and the system’s error logs help us investigate what is happening and work out what needs attention.

Monitoring helps us spot problems, but it does not guarantee uptime or a particular response time. We agree support arrangements as part of your hosting service.

Daily database backups

Looking after your system also means preparing for when information needs to be recovered. Our standard database setup includes daily backups and monitoring checks for missed, failed or overdue backups. We confirm the schedule and how long backups are kept for each service.

Backups provide recovery points for information stored in the application’s database. Uploaded documents and images need separate storage recovery arrangements; restoring the database does not restore those files.

Weekly checks that backups can be restored

Creating a backup is one part of the process; checking that it can be restored is another. Our standard setup includes weekly restore checks, with the schedule confirmed for each service.

A backup is restored into an isolated test environment, away from your live system, then checked for database structure and record counts. This helps identify recovery problems before a backup is needed, although it cannot guarantee complete recovery or a particular recovery time.

Automated testing and controlled releases

Keeping a system running also means changing it carefully. Before we release an update, automated checks test the code, integrations and important tasks in a real browser, with the checks chosen for the application.

Required checks must pass for the exact version being released. Each release has a recorded version and history, so we can see what changed and when. Testing helps reduce the chance of problems reaching users.

Security checks as part of delivery

That release process also includes security scans. These check the software components your application relies on and the packaged release for known vulnerabilities, helping us find issues before an update reaches users.

Findings help us decide what needs attention as part of maintenance and delivery. Scans are one part of looking after security; they cannot find every issue. Sign-in methods and user permissions depend on the application.

Affordable hosting, without per-user hosting fees

We bring this ongoing care together in a hosting service priced around your system’s needs. Codename does not charge a per-user hosting fee, so adding someone to your team does not add another hosting seat to your bill.

We agree the costs with you, including storage, traffic and other resource needs. Third-party subscriptions, usage charges and payment-processing fees may also apply.

A clear scope, with people who know your system

Before you get started, we explain the service, costs, backup arrangements and support terms in plain English. Your hosting agreement confirms what is included, the backup and restore-check schedules, how long backups are kept and the arrangements for uploaded files.

Capacity and support response arrangements are agreed for your system. New features and larger development work are scoped separately, so you know what is covered by hosting and what needs its own plan.
